Race 1/49 – Lifeskills Run for Autism

This past Saturday, April 11th, we did our first of 49 athletic events!

A little backstory first…

My wife works for the WKU Kelly Autism Program. As you can infer from the program name, it is a program designed to provide assistance and support for individuals with autism and Asperger’s. The program she works for recently held a 4 Mile Run and 1 Mile Walk to fundraise for their services.

Since she works for the program, we had to be there bright and early to help. Obviously, Moon Pie had to come, too.

The turnout was pretty impressive. I was especially impressed by this young woman. I am afraid I can’t remember her name right now, but she has autism (and in fact, did not even speak until she was five years old). She sang the National Anthem before the start of the race.

Wow. That’s all I can say.

As I said in my last blog post, I am going to wear a different dork shirt to each race. For this race, I am wearing my Garbage Pail Kid Adam Bomb shirt!

This will also be the first shirt in my dork quilt.

Tina and I were doing the walk instead of the run, which means I was allowed to be slightly obnoxious and take pictures as we went. (I promise – I didn’t stop walking. I snapped as I walked.)

We pushed little guy in his stroller. He was pretty much zonked out by the time we were done.

It was a nice, easy way to start our recommitment to a physically healthy life. And it was fun – this is only the third “race” I’ve been involved with. I definitely understand how people get hooked on this!

We’ve already signed up for our second “race.” It’s on April 27th!

The Next Week…

Long time, no write.

I’m still vlogging. I’m just slow about it.

But I’m blogging today because my weight loss is going much slower than it should be.

I weigh over 350 pounds. I should be able to lose two to three pounds a week, no problem.

I am not. I am losing roughly two to three pounds a month.

I know why. This isn’t a blog post where I lament my slow weight loss and tear at my hair in frustration.

No, I’m losing weight slowly because I eat too much and don’t move enough.

The end.

In an attempt to stop this, I have done/am doing two things.

The thing I am doing – for the next week, I will post a photo of everything I eat, report my weight daily, AND say what I did for exercise, here on the blog. I don’t want to say I’ll do it forever, but I am certainly planning to do it for more than a week. I just don’t want to say I’ll do it for a month (or three months… or a year…) right off the bat. So for now… I’m going to do it for a week.

I’m going to take photos of my food and post an Instagram mosaic of my food. I’m going to be completely honest – the good, the bad, and the ugly. I feel like my diet is extremely clean (mostly), but I still do eat the occasional candy bar or drink the rare Sprite. Still, feel free to comment, constructively criticize, or whatever else on my food choices.

Overall, we eat an extremely clean diet, but we do have our indulgences. I may be eating too many indulgences – I’m hoping this photographic food log will help.

The thing I have already done…

My family recommitted to a healthy lifestyle this weekend. On Saturday, we took part in the first of 49 athletic events.

I’ll blog about the event tomorrow.

So, the 49 things…

If you’ve been watching my vlogs, you know that I am a HUGE fan of dork t-shirts, and that I initially planned to wear a different shirt for every 10 pounds until I got to goal weight.

However, I have recently decided to slightly modify that.

Have you ever heard of a t-shirt quilt?

Basically, it’s just what it sounds like – a quilt made out of t-shirts. And it just so happens that my wife is incredibly crafty and knows how to quilt.

I want to make a gigantic King-sized quilt that will represent everything about my weight loss. When I get to goal weight, I want to hold this quilt up and say, “This quilt is a pictorial and nostalgic representation of me and the journey I took to today.”

I am going to have a collection of 49 dork shirts, representing (more or less) every five pounds (or so) of my weight from its highest (402.8) to my ultimate goal (currently set at 180, but we’ll see). I’m still in the process of collecting and making those shirts, but so far, they are primarily concerned with nostalgic things from my childhood, such as Power Rangers, Ninja Turtles, classic Nickelodeon, and some old-school Nintendo games.

Oh, and why 49? Because seven rows of seven quilt blocks (cut from the front of each t-shirt) is the size you need to make a nice big King quilt. I know my wife won’t let me put it on our bed, but it’ll be awesome to cuddle up under on the couch on a cold winter night.

That’ll be the front of the quilt.

The back of the quilt will be 49 patches from race t-shirts.

I’m not a runner. Right now, I’m just a walker. But Tina and I were talking about it, and we want Moon Pie to grow up in an athletic household. I want going to a 5K early one Saturday morning to be the norm for him. And for that to be the norm, we have to get started now, when he’s not quite seven months old.

I have no delusions of being a runner just yet. I currently weigh over 350 pounds. That’s too heavy for me to start running right now. I don’t want my knees or back to blow out. However, I can start walking events (a lot of races around here also contain a walking component), and I am.

At each event, I’ll wear a different dork shirt.

And when I am at goal, I’ll have my amazing quilt, one side dork and nostalgic and the other side t-shirts from races and other athletic events that helped make me a fit, healthy athlete.

So, to sum up…

I am going to start photographing my food and posting it, along with my daily weight, on this blog. I am pledging to do it for a week straight.

I am going to collect dork shirts AND complete 49 different athletic events as I progress to goal weight. Just an FYI – Tina has told me that one of the events MUST be the half-marathon (or marathon – dare I dream?) at Disney World. Frankly, I hope at least one of them is a Tough Mudder.

I once lost weight down to 250 pounds. I’m past being ashamed of gaining so much back. Now, I just have to get there and go farther.

I’ve done it once. I’ll do it again.

Still rocking the Green Ranger shirt. I have 6.2 pounds to go before I get a new dork shirt to wear to weigh-in, and I’ve already bought it from ShirtPunch.

So, I lost a pound. Down, admittedly, but not as much as I’d want.

I definitely need to up my exercise. That will help. I’ve now doing Jillian’s 30 Day Shred, and I feel confident that will help me lose a bit more. Tina is doing C25K, and even though I’m not comfortable hitting the pavement at my weight, I’m doing my own modified version in the house. (Rather than jog, I’m basically doing stairs for the jogging portion. It’s definitely getting my heart rate up, which is going to increase my leg strength and my cardio endurance for when I am light enough to be able to run.)

One thing I am doing differently this week is pre-tracking my food. Every night, I go to WeightWatchers.com and enter what I suspect I’ll eat the next day. (I’m a little OCD about planning dinner, so that’s already decided. I just have to decide what I’ll have for lunch and dinner.) I purposefully leave some of my points unaccounted for, because I know I may not eat exactly what I’ve got planned. I’m obviously allowed to deviate. In fact, I did that today. I was supposed to eat oatmeal, but instead, I chose to eat a ham and cheese sandwich.

Right now, it is helping me because I know how much food I planned to eat, and if I’m eating off of my meals, I know how much of a cushion I have. That also helps me decide if I need to eat it or not.

Just last night, I thought I would have a green smoothie before bed. This is obviously a healthy food, and I even had the points for it. However, before I started pulling the ingredients out, I objectively assessed my hunger. I wasn’t hungry; I’d rather not use those points than just eat them because they were there.

I want a bigger loss next week. A pound is nice. Two is better.

Using the Wii to Rebuild Cardio Endurance

I took several unexpected weeks off when we bought our new house.

Have you ever tried to keep up an exercise routine while you are moving?

It’s tough. I won’t say it’s impossible, but I will say that I didn’t do it.

I could feel my cardio endurance slipping away. Our new home is two stories. I realized after we were in the midst of moving in that I would feel a bit winded, just climbing to the second story.

Exercise is definitely key to my feeling of well-being. And unfortunately, I just let it drift away.

Now I know that muscle memory will definitely bring it back quickly, but it requires effort to bring it back.

And unfortunately, just as I had once been in the habit of exercising, I had quickly gotten into the habit of NOT exercising.

I knew I didn’t have the stones to do a real Jillian Michaels workout as soon as I reclaimed my healthy lifestyle. I would have to build up to it.

Cardio felt like the best way to do it, but I also wanted it to be fun. After all, I had to both get back into the exercise habit AND build up my endurance again.

I chose to use the Wii to do it, and for the past week, I rebuilt my cardio strength with Just Dance 2 and 3.

If you aren’t familiar with the Wii, Just Dance is a game series of popular Top 40’s-esque songs (and a few other random songs I have NEVER heard before). You have an Avatar on screen, and you mirror his or her moves. It keeps track of your movements, rewarding you with points as you dance.

It’s a surprisingly tough workout! Best yet, it’s fun, so I’m able to pop it in and quickly do a 30 minute workout without even realizing it!

After just one day, I felt my cardio endurance returning. A few days later, I pretty much felt like my old self again. And best yet, I feel like I have reclaimed my exercise habit. Hopefully, this time it won’t leave again.

If you are here for the first time because you googled Weight Loss, then welcome! I hope you’ll add me to your Google Reader (or facebook) and stay awhile. If you are new, let me warn you – I am a dork. I blog about dorky things. I talk about how the Power Rangers and Freddy Krueger can help me lose weight. I have a three month old son, and pictures of him show up here a LOT.

Just a quick recap about me: I am morbidly obese. I have been my entire life. I currently weigh in the 370s. I’ve been as high as 402.8. I was once down to 250, but I had a bad breakup and gained a lot of weight back and regained a lot of bad habits. I later met the love of my life, we got married, are still very happily married, and we just had our first baby, Moon Pie (and just because some people are now naming their babies ridiculous things, like Hashtag, I should mention that Moon Pie is not his real name but is his “blog nickname,” because I don’t want him to grow up and google himself and discover that Dad posted tons of embarrassing baby pics on him before he could object.)

A little more about me: I’m big into nostalgia. If it happened in the 80s or 90s, I’m probably a big fan. I tie my nostalgia into weight loss and healthy living, and that is going to be a common trend on my blog in 2013.

If you are here to lose weight, let me give you one piece of advice.

Do what works for you. And do what you can live with.

If you are thinking Atkins sounds like the plan for you but you are already lamenting the loss of bread, then don’t do it. If you think Weight Watchers sound perfect but you aren’t sure you can stomach losing $40 a month to go to meetings, then don’t do it.

It must work for you.

I am a Weight Watcher. I know that when I follow the program, I lose weight. I need the meetings, and the program provides a structure that I need. It is what I have chosen.

Choose what ultimately works best for you.

If you are new to losing weight, I really recommend you dive into the world of fitness blogs. The people who write weight loss blogs are, by and large, the friendliest, most supportive internet community I have ever belonged to. Whether you are just a reader or decide to start your own blog (which I recommend, for accountability, and it’s completely free – you don’t have to have a blog with your own domain name), you’ll find tons of support.

And speaking of that support, I am also going to implement a new feature here. There are so many blogs out there that I love to read, and I’m going to share a different one every Tuesday. Since I am so pro-Weight Watchers, I wanted to share my favorite Weight Watcher blog.

It’s called Cats That Look Like Hitler, and it is crammed full of Kitlers, kitties that look like Hitler!

Okay, this is not a WW blog, but the person who writes it follows Weight Watchers and she has done AMAZING. If you are looking for a successful story, then look no further.

Brooke: Not on a Diet is this week’s spotlighted blog.

Brooke writes with humor and grace, and she is very approachable.

Here’s why you should read Brooke… She’s lost more than half her body weight. Seriously. She’s lost over 160 pounds.

She also got married this year, and she (unlike me) is proof positive that not EVERYONE gains weight when they tie the knot.

I could keep talking, but instead, I encourage you to add Brooke’s blog to your reader.

And for those of you just dipping your toes into the fitness blogging world, a great way to stay motivated is to join a community of like-minded people.

Roni Noone (who writes another great blog to add, by the way) is starting a diet bet tomorrow. It’s not too late to sign up. Basically, you pitch $20 into the pot, and if you lose 4% of your starting weight by the end of January, you get to share the post. It’s not winner-take-all, so you aren’t competing with anyone but yourself.
